Emerging Markets Investing & Fixed Income [VHS] [Import]
This pair of programs from the PBS series Beyond Wall Street: The Art of Investing highlights two money managers and their very different approaches to investing. Mark Mobius, who made his name as a great global investor with the Templeton Emerging Markets Fund, is visited in Asia by journalist Andrew Tobias to explain the difficulties and outright obstacles facing an international investor. In countries that don't enforce accounting rules and other niceties of modern business, the game is tricky indeed, and in visits to companies in Thailand, Mobius and Tobias discuss the dilemmas inherent in trying to spot promising concerns in distant lands. The opposite of that potential chaos would be the safety many investors envision in bonds. William Gross, whose mathematical ability made him a great blackjack player in his youth and has helped him to be a top bond fund manager at Pacific Investment Management Company, explains the basics of the bond market. He also provides a serious look at how bonds may not be as risk-free in some circumstances as investors sometimes tend to believe. Hosted by journalists Tobias and Jane Bryant Quinn, this is a highly informative and balanced look at two important areas any investor should know about. --Robert J. McNamara
